About GPMI

Air pollution is the fourth leading risk factor for deaths globally. Still, over a billion people reside in areas with no air pollution monitoring, and many more in regions where data exists but isn’t publicly available. This gap is most acute in high-polluting, low- and middle-income nations. For example, 80% of total life years lost due to PM2.5 occur in Asia, but only 6.8% of governments in Asia publicly disclose their air quality data. These high-polluting regions also often lack the financial resources required for effective monitoring technology. The Global Pollution Monitoring Initiative (GPMI) is working to fill this gap by generating and providing high-quality, real-time accessible air quality and pollution data to communities in the highest-risk cities around the world.

Our Approach

The GPMI will employ novel techniques to provide vital air quality and pollution data including:

  • Leveraging state-of-the-art real-time satellite particulate matter measures.
  • Using social media networks to quickly disseminate information to impacted communities.
  • Targeting interventions at the highest-risk cities around the world.
  • Providing city-specific historical and real-time data on air pollution, translating the pollution exposure to health-impacts, and collating news articles, research reports and resources available to combat pollution specific to the city.

Our Impact

The GPMI’s work looks to:

  • Fill critical gaps in data quality and accessibility for air quality monitoring.
  • Understand the impacts of information on environmental policy decisions.
  • Present a cost-effective tool to empower communities to take sustained measures towards improved air quality outcomes worldwide.
